Just as I did with the dairy products I started to research what non-dairy product designs looked like. This helps me know what to include to in the final product design for customers to instantly know that the product is dairy free. I found that almost all products included an image of the type of plant the milk was made from.

Excellent work ... an example of a really good blog and numerous postings, this should undoubtedly be commended. Your interrogation of the packaging is good.
Try to now develop a broader collection on research around the target market and then try and build an even more extensive brand 'position-map' structure of where high-end and low budget equivalent brands are placed within the markets, collecting this resource will also help you to build a specific brand identity, i.e, what colours are being used in the marketplace, what types of typography is extensively used etc.,
